Guided Tour
Part 5: Use It with Others
Activities and routines for a staff meeting or PLC.
Learning UDL Together
In Part 2 you met the idea that barriers exist in the design, not the learner. The resources in this part help a team explore that idea in a staff meeting, a leadership meeting or a UDL professional learning community (PLC).
Barrier or Important Factor?
The card sort has 20 cards, ten at a time. For each card you decide: is this a barrier in the design, or an important factor about the learner? Every answer explains why.
It works on your own, or on a shared screen with your team talking through each card.
Three Starting Points
The Barrier Is in the Design: Three Starting Points has three professional learning routines. Each takes 10 to 20 minutes and needs no prior knowledge of UDL.
- We’ve All Been in This Room
- The Missing Piece
- Two Truths and a Redesign
Choose one routine, show the slides it names, and end with the Companion Table slide. The slides are a PowerPoint you can download.
Plan a Session with a Choice Board
A choice board lets each person pick what fits their time and interests. Use one that is ready, or make your own.
- The Designing to the Edges UDL Choice Board on the home page has nine activities, lettered A to I, for a staff meeting or community of practice gathering.
- The Jigsaw Professional Learning Choice Board in the Aiming for ALL Collection starts everyone on one shared piece, then each person picks one more.
- The Choice Board Designer builds a board of up to 9 squares from resources and activities on this site and up to three links of your own, with a goal or instructions for each. You can print it, save it or share it as a link.
Explore About 6 minutes
- Play one round of the card sort: ten cards.
- Open Three Starting Points and choose the routine you would use at your next meeting.
- Make a board for your next meeting with the Choice Board Designer: three choices for a short meeting, or nine for a tic-tac-toe activity.
Beth’s Tip
Begin every meeting with what your school is already doing well. People are more open to noticing barriers when their good work has been seen first.
Reflect
Who will you share one of these resources with, and when?
